The one street food that people are missing the most in this lockdown is momos. Some of us have already attempted to make it and some are still skeptical. If you haven’t yet tried making momos at home even when you want to, then let me tell you that it is not as difficult as it seems.
We had our own doubts at first. We were so worried that it would be very difficult and time consuming, but now that we gave it a try, there’s no going back. We have made it 3 times already! Can you believe it?
Honestly the first one was not that good. But now we are obsessed. The best thing about it is that you can control what goes in it.
You can be assured of the quality of the products used and even customize the filling as per your taste buds.
We have made them once with just cabbage and other time with other veggies as well. You can use whatever veggies you want and have in your kitchen.
I have tried using onion, cabbage, carrot and broccoli. You can use mushrooms, green beans, baby corn, capsicum/bell pepper, zucchini or even paneer would be great with this recipe. The possibilities are endless. Chop them finely and you are good to go.
It is an amazing way to hide veggies if you have picky kids at home.
The reason that making momos seem like a tedious task is the number of things you have to do. So to simplify it, We have divided the process in 3 simple steps: Making the filling, making the dough and finally making the momo.

Ingredients-
For the filling:
- Oil- 2 tsp
- Green chilly finely chopped- 2
- Ginger grated & Garlic chopped or ginger garlic paste- 2 tsp
- Chopped onion – 1 medium
- Cabbage shredded- 1 cup (Reduce if using other veggies accordingly)
- Carrot shredded – 1/2 cup
- Any other veggie shredded or finely chopped
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
- Soy sauce (optional)- 1 tsp
For the dough:
- All purpose flour (Maida) – 1 cup
- Warm water to make dough
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
For the filling-
- Take a pan and heat oil in it.
- Add green chili and cook lightly.
- Add ginger garlic paste and cook until the raw smell of it fades away.
- Add onion and cook until it turns translucent
- Finally add cabbage & carrot (and other veggies, if using)
- Season with salt and black pepper.
- Add soy sauce.
- Mix well and stir for a few minutes until veggies are cooked.
- Turn off the heat and let the filling cool down for a bit.
For the dough-
- In a bowl, take your all purpose flour and a pinch of salt.
- Add warm water little by little and make a soft dough.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for atleast 30 minutes.
Assembling-
- Now to make the momo, take a small portion of your dough and roll out a very thin circle.
- Next, put a spoonful of the prepared filling in the middle of the circle.
- Carefully fold it in any shape you like. You can use a little water to seal the edges of your momos.
- Repeat the same with the rest of the dough.
- Steam momos for 12-15 minutes.(I have used an idli maker to steam my momos. Simply boil water, grease the idli stand and cover after you put your momos in)
If you don’t have an idli steamer, you can also steam them in a pan. Just boil water in a cooker/pan deep enough to accommodate another vessel. Put momos on a greased vessel and put in inside the cooker. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the momos. Cover it and let it cook for 12-15 mins.
